Infrastructure scarcity is the stumbling block for India trying to achieve sustainable double-digit growth.

Power, airports, roads are all in the limelight but what about parking. The car sales in India are growing at a healthy 30% annually . We are building roads to drive our cars on but do we have the space to park them?

There are over 15 lakh cars on Mumbai’s roads, but common parking space for only — hold your breath — 8,000, thanks to the 100-odd pay-and-park areas across the city. Delhi has over 5 million cars and two-wheelers on its roads , but not enough parking spaces. The demand for parking space has, on an average in the main markets of Delhi, outstripped demand by 43%. It is not just the two biggest cities in India that are facing the space crunch. Parking space is fast becoming a major issue in other cities like Kolkata, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Chandigarh, Pune and many other urban and semi-urban cities across the country.

So does anybody have the answer? “Yes”, says Mr. Rajesh Jain from Anchit Consulting Group (ACG), “Automatic Multi-level Parking systems are the solution and Delhi seems to have realized it”. MCD and NDMC have identified 22 locations for automatic parking systems and have started the tendering process. Its not just them, private real-estate developers in Mumbai and Pune have started including Automatic parking systems as part of their developments. This has generated interest among the authorities in Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Indore, Shimla and Chandigarh who have started the tendering for similar projects to tackle their own parking problems.

It is estimated that an automatic parking system requires a little less than half as much space as a manual parking for every car parking slot. Add to that the advantage of larger number of floors in a given height restriction and you can park nearly 3-4 times as many cars in the same amount of space using Automatic parking systems.
“Automatic multi-level parking systems are not only the ultimate solution to parking space scarcity; they also increase safety for your car as well as you. These systems are the ultimate in customer-convenience, not to mention the fuel and time savings from not having to drive around looking for a parking spot and sometimes driving out without finding one. This is the future of parking in India”, says Mr. Jain. PALIS are system suppliers to NDMC’s K G marg project for 1582 car spaces, DDA’s Nehru Place Project with 1801 Car Spaces and Manglam Place (Rohini) project with 900 Car Spaces. All these projects are located in Delhi.

The biggest challenge the developers are facing in implementing these technologies in India is the service-backup. Mr. Jain says, “We have formed a SPV in India with Palis, that will provide service-backup and maintenance for these systems.”
The solution is there. Parking could become a pleasurable experience. The challenge is for the authorities to realize the need and move quickly.
